Being a fresh graduate from university with a degree in Life Sciences as well as an active athlete, Shona wanted to do something that merges science and sports. One Sunday after church, she asked God to show her how to use her sports training experiences for His purposes.
Next day, two SYFC staff spoke to Shona about joining Project Serve under the Sports & Adventure Ministry! It was meant to be a stint but as the weeks passed, she felt there was more to do here and she should stay for a longer period for her work to have meaningful impact on the youths she came into contact with. So she came in as a staff. Currently, she is being certified as a kayaking and dragon boat coach, and as a sports climbing instructor. She is also involved in organising TeenSportz, facilitating at enrichment programmes and doing community outreach.
“My biggest change thus far is having to meet people constantly. I also often wonder how effective I will be as a coach in the future,” Shona shares. Pray with her that in this period of training and certification, she may grow in wisdom in God’s Word and in teaching it to students she encounter.

After volunteering for a while in the Youth Guidance Ministry (YG), Kangrui left his job as a stockbroker to take a better look at the work. His first step was Project Serve.
The transition from a weekend volunteer to Project Serve was positive. He found the culture different from what he had experienced in his six years of working life. During that five months, he came to know more at-risk youths and felt that his journey with them should not end that soon – he saw the need to walk with them for a longer period. Responding to God’s prompting for him to do the work full-time, Kangrui joined the YG staff team in 2018 at age 29. That year, he also got married.
“Real change in a young person can only happen because of God’s work,” said Kangrui as he saw a 12-year old youth making a stand as a Christian not to take part in illegal activities when his friends tried to influence him. This youth came to know the Lord personally a year before through YG.
Relying on the Lord, Kangrui is plunging into reaching at-risk youths in a number of institutional homes and social work organisations. He prepares and runs programmes, and leads in the study of God’s Word. He also ensures YG youths and volunteers are mobilised to share the gospel together with the staff team.
