Wong Zi Chian, a 21-year-old polytechnic graduate, came to know the Lord Jesus in her younger days when a SYFC staff approached her. She serves in STEM (Support, Teaching and Engagement Ministries) Project Serve.

What is your role in STEM?

My work includes being a website designer for SYFC backend management such as the key tracking system. I also contribute to Secondary School and Junior College Ministry (SJM) by designing a working prototype for their outreach tracking work. In addition, I am part of the small video production team for their outreach Instagram account. I help Preteens Ministry (PTM) in some of the outreach programs, like their year-end Christmas event and interactive booth at Celebrate Christmas in Singapore.

Describe your typical week.

I’m at the Emmanuel House office two days a week. On the other three-and-a-half days, I work from home. I work on the computer almost all the time. There are regular work meetings with my colleagues on digital projects in which we discuss the nature of the project, objectives and solve software problems. I also set aside one afternoon every week for self-learning in coding languages. My supervisors meet me once biweekly for a check-in and guide me in my personal devotion time.

What made you decide to be in Project Serve?

I graduated from polytechnic in May 2023 with a Diploma in Design (Product Innovation) and was looking for a job with flexibility so that I can meet some of my family needs at that point of time. My church leader and full-time SYFC staff, Sarah Koh, introduced me to Project Serve. After finding out more, I thought it was a good opportunity to grow in my faith while using my skills to serve the Lord in a Christian organisation. At the same time, I could also start providing for myself and my family.

Share a challenging episode.

At a PTM Christmas event, I found it tough to engage the children. Most of the 10-12 year olds were loud and not listening to our sharing, so I found it difficult to get their attention. I was also afraid that I did not have enough knowledge to answer their questions. From this short exposure at six centres, I learnt that engaging children is not easy and requires patience. It was a good chance to improve my skills in communicating with children.

What do you look forward to in your work?

I look forward to learning new things and working on different projects from time to time. I work mostly behind-the-scenes and find it enjoyable to create solutions to solve problems that our staff and volunteers face.

How would you like REACH readers to pray for you?

In the coming months, I will be befriending primary school girls with the PreTeens Ministry staff. Pray for wisdom, creativity and patience to guide them in their extra-curricular activities and that I will continue to trust in God’s plan for my future, relying on Him for strength.
