Dear friend,

Throughout the year, Singapore Youth for Christ organises different internship programs. In each program, participants learn about the gospel and important ministry principles. They also get to share the gospel with other young people and experience what it is like serving God full-time. I would like to share some of our intern’s stories with you in this letter. These interns have just finished their O-Level, A-Level and National Service, and have joined the Project Serve program since January this year. I trust that their stories will encourage you.

Carys Tay’s parents joined Project Serve and were very active volunteers when they were youths. Therefore, they were very supportive when she told them about her plans to join Project Serve after her O-Level. She shared that she has benefitted from the Two Ways to Live sessions. Not only did the gospel framework helped her to better understand what she believes, she also became more confident in sharing the gospel with the other young people she met on the streets. She recounted one of her street evangelism experiences, “I was very afraid to approach them because I was worried that the four students might be upset to hear the gospel. But I’m so thankful that I had my friends Jiaen and Glennis (fellow Project Servants) with me, and we could approach the students together. I’m thankful too that the four students were very open to hear the gospel.”

Unlike Carys who has heard about Project Serve from a young age, Charlotte Tay only heard about it four days before the start of the program from her elder sister. Charlotte shared, “Project Serve is a very steep learning curve for me. There were many tasks I couldn’t do without help and I was tempted to give up, but the session on faithfulness taught me to give my best in whatever I do despite my limitations. Though I hated it when my weaknesses were revealed in my work and that was when I realised that I have a lot of pride in me. I thought I could fix stuff on my own many times, but I couldn’t. The session on teachability then taught me that I need to first humbly accept my limitations and to look to the perfect God to enable me to do His work.”

Andrew Nathaniel Tanubrata attended Life Group when he was studying in a junior college. While waiting for his enlistment in April, he decided that joining Project Serve would be a good way to spend his time more meaningfully. Something that he has been doing actively even before joining Project Serve was to reach out to his friends. And since the start of this year, he has been inviting his friends to read the Bible with him. He shared, “They have been asking many difficult questions, but I’m glad they are engaged.” Today, Andrew is also training to be a Life Group leader and is encouraging his juniors to share the gospel with their friends.

For many of these young people, it is heartening to hear that other than learning and serving together, they have found a community of friends whom they can be mutually accountable to in their faith journey. This exemplifies what Scripture exhorts us to do in Hebrews 10:24 — to encourage one another to love and good works. Please continue to pray for this batch of Project Servants that as they embark on their next phase of life, they will continue to be steadfast in the Lord and be salt and light — sharing Christ with those around them.

All Glory To God,

Richard Tan
