Joshua Goh was never involved in SYFC before he met us. However, he has a desire to serve the Lord and a heart for young people. At 39, he took up the opportunity to see our work up close and decide to join our ITE ministry full time.
What is your role?
I co-lead a team with a volunteer to plan and coordinate our PEP (Prayer-Evangelism-Play) meetings for Christian students to aid them in their spiritual growth and encourage them to reach out to their friends.
What led you to come in?
After I stopped serving as a church staff in my previous church, I waited upon the Lord for His leading. I wanted to continue serving Him in a ministry setting. During the season of waiting, I shared with my men’s prayer group and one brother connected me to Wilson Tan, an associate of SYFC who then linked me with Carmen Chen, the ITE Ministry Coordinator. After I chatted with Carmen, I started as a volunteer. I, then, joined the Project Serve program and eventually the full-time staff team.
What is one area of growth so far that you treasure in the work of the gospel?
I appreciate the culture of accountability in SYFC. The model of supervisors keeping in touch with and guiding team members, and we as staff playing the role of supervisors to project servants keeps me humble and grounded. I learn to work in a team and be an example to younger ones like students, volunteers and project servants.
What is one thing that’s been encouraging for you?
I thank God that He enables all who serve Him. Even though I am not an ITE graduate, I have been able to identify and connect with team members who were from ITE, and most importantly with the students. Close supervision from my ministry coordinator and guidance from a senior staff have been most valuable in my transition from church work to para-church work. It has been a grace-filled journey. Thanks be to God!
What is one challenge you have to keep overcoming as you reach ITE students?
I have to ensure Bible study with them is done in a creative and relevant way such that they can understand and grasp God’s truth.
