Part of my work in the Secondary School and Junior College Ministry involves meeting Christian students in small groups to teach them the Bible and challenge them to bring the gospel to their friends.

One student I am currently meeting is a year 5 student in an Integrated Programme (IP) school. She has always been sensible and concerned about her spiritual growth. But what impresses me most about her is how she has already decided at such a young age that she wants to serve the Lord in the mission field and how she takes her service in church very seriously.

As a year 5 student, she is allowed to change her CCA (Co-Curriculum Activity) and during our first meeting this year, I asked if she was planning to switch to a new CCA. The easier option would be to continue with her current CCA because she enjoys the activities and is familiar with the teachers-in-charge and friends. However, she simply decided she will choose something different because the timing for her current CCA clashes with a church commitment.

Her friends were very puzzled as to why she chose a new CCA, and this gave her the opportunity to explain the basis of her decision and start interacting with them about the gospel.

While many of her non-believing friends couldn’t understand why she chose to give up a good CCA for church commitment, she was just happy she could use this as a conversation-starter with them whom she had been thinking of reaching.

What an example of a follower of our Lord Jesus who makes a counter-cultural decision that puzzles the world but pleases her Master!
