Being a Christian is an introvert’s worst nightmare!
In June, Secondary School and Junior College Ministry (SJM) held an evangelistic event, which was a series of volunteering and workshop sessions to raise awareness of environmental issues. At first I was hesitant but eventually I signed up to be a group host. My group comprised three incredibly extroverted and chatty students! I was really pushed out of my comfort zone during the event, having to constantly engage these cheerful youths.
Jesus instructs us to be open, unashamed and bold about our faith. How will unbelievers come to know Him if no one tells them the Good News? If you are an introvert like me, you probably did a double take when you first realised what it would entail. To be an effective evangelist, one has to engage others, including strangers. Furthermore, one must dare to share earnestly from the heart. Introverts like me tend to be more reserved, especially towards unfamiliar faces.
What is God’s solution? The Holy Spirit. When we ask Jesus into our lives, we receive the gift of the Spirit who empowers and grows us to be more like Jesus. The Holy Spirit has truly grown me to be unashamed of the gospel and be unafraid of what others think of it.
It is through the Holy Spirit’s supernatural power that I was able to serve faithfully at that SJM event, enabling me to accomplish a task above my own effort or skill. In the end, what could have been a ‘nightmare’ turned into joy!
The hard work paid off! One of the students joined me and a few volunteers for lunch, where we got to share the gospel and our faith with him!
After Jesus’ resurrection, he issued the disciples one final, ultimate command: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 ESV). Today we are empowered by that same power too.
