After the shocking revelation of my new weight on the scale one day, which officially placed me in the overweight category, I knew I must do something about it!
I started to exercise. I followed workout videos daily for three months straight and lost the extra weight I had gained. Then I became lazy and complacent thinking it was okay to skip exercising for a day or two and finally stopping all together. Eventually I gained back what I lost.
After one round of success then failure, it was very difficult to restart my exercise routine. I realized perhaps exercising everyday was too torturous for me, so a more realistic aim was 2-3 times weekly. While keeping to this frequency, I came to see how my effort and hard work added up and mattered in keeping me healthy as the months went by.
I find this true when it comes to reading the Bible and praying. As much as we don’t see the effect overnight in our Christian growth, God is working in us as we seek to know Him through His Word and in our prayer life.
There are times we fail to read the Bible or pray but each time we are reminded to, it is not too late to restart both habits. There is no place for complacency if we want to know the Lord more. There is no need for comparison too. Some people enjoy exercising everyday (but not me) and can read more chapters of the Bible in the same amount of time or express themselves to God in longer prayers. Rather than becoming dejected with an aim that is too difficult to reach, we can start small and keep to the goal we set. May this journey of knowing the Lord be a delightful and joyful experience for all of us!
