“…but one thing is necessary.” (Luke 10:42)

When Jesus came to Martha’s home, as a good host, she took the opportunity to attend to his needs (Luke 10:38-43). There were many things to look into. And she expected Mary to assist her. Overwhelmed, she complained that Jesus didn’t get Mary to help her.

Surprisingly, Jesus told her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things…” Jesus was not saying Martha did the wrong things. But she had a choice between looking to his needs or listening to him. He had not much time left on earth, as he was on his way to Jerusalem, to the cross. And he had much to teach them. And so, he gently redirected her focus, “…but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Sometimes, we need to choose between what is good and what is best.
