New Segment!

Volunteers make up a large, vital part of the SYFC team. This year, we feature six individuals whom we have the privilege of serving the Lord with. While their involvement, availability, ages and backgrounds differ, all share the same desire to see more young people come to hear about Jesus.

In this issue, we introduce Priscilla Ong, a social worker.
When in secondary school, her then Sunday School teacher Stephanie Tan (our former executive director) connected her to SYFC. Thereafter, she continued helping in Career Youth Ministry’s (CYM) events. Now she volunteers in Preteens Ministry (PTM).

You volunteered in PTM since 2014. Why did you move over from CYM?

The CYM staff connected to me then was Jennifer Pang and when she moved to PTM, I just followed her since we had become very good friends. Also, I think I am more effective with children. I love spending time with them and telling them about God.

How are you involved in PTM?

Because I am not as available, I help in ad hoc events. Sometimes I am responsible to plan them, other times I just help wherever help is needed, for instance at the children’s booth in Celebrate Christmas in Singapore in December. Once I know the dates, I would take leave and assist at the children’s booth where PTM needs a lot of help.

What is one challenge and what has the Lord taught you in the process of dealing with it?

One of the biggest challenges for me is time management, especially if I am part of an event planning committee. Carving out time for meetings and coordinating with other volunteers who are students or have different working hours from me, can be tough. Sometimes, I battle with my own tiredness to attend Zoom meetings after a day’s work. In such moments, I am reminded not to depend on myself but on the strength of the Lord to serve Him.

What is your joy while serving in PTM?

Seeing the children responding well to me and to the gospel really encourages me.

How can Reach readers pray for you?

Please pray I will have good time management and to continue depending on God in my service. Today’s children are very well-informed, and I sometimes cannot keep up with what they know. Therefore, please pray for me for wisdom and the willingness to learn new things so I can remain relevant to them.
