Derek Yeo, 32, worked as an assistant engineer in a manufacturing company after he graduated from polytechnic but decided to switch to teaching two years ago. At that time, he also moved from serving in the Poly Ministry to Preteens Ministry (PTM) where he helped to plan events and holiday programmes, and conduct enrichment sessions. However, the greatest work is done unseen, quietly with a lone student, week after week.

What is typical week for you now?

As I’m on a practicum in a primary school, I carry out most duties of a teacher.

What challenges do you face keeping up with your responsibilities?

It is mainly the clashing of last-minute meetings and commitments that come up occasionally in the afternoons. Making time to read up and prepare for the discussion may be overlooked. I also have to prepare for children’s ministry and Bible studies in church.

What keeps you going in YFC and why preteens?

After volunteering in the Polytechnic Ministry for 6-7 years coupled with transiting into teaching, I thought a change of service would better expose me to interact and serve children. I found myself enjoying the interaction with children. Furthermore, I come to realise over the years of serving that many young people are struggling, leaving the church community. I find purpose in helping preteens build their biblical foundation as they prepare for challenges ahead.

How do you stay relevant to preteens?

As I continue to serve them, I will have opportunities to know them personally – their likes and dislikes. My current work keeps me in direct contact with them.

To you, what is most important in your walk with the Lord as you share the Gospel with them?

I believe it has to be modelling after Jesus, which I often fall short of. But He encourages and enables me to continue serving. First, my walk, then my work can follow. My work for the Lord must always be the outflow of my walk with Him.

To you, what is key for the preteens you bring God’s Word to?

I believe it is to help them understand and apply it to themselves in their context, guiding them to see the relevance of their faith in daily living.

How can REACH readers pray for you and for this group of preteens?

I’m often tempted to depend on myself. Pray that my walk with Christ will shape my speech, lifestyle (behaviour), love for my loved ones and others, faith, and purity. Pray also that I will pay attention to my work for Christ, trusting He will grow and protect the seed planted in the hearts of the preteens though I may not see the results.

Derek is happily married to Jolynn, a full-time SYFC staff. They worship in Bethesda Pasir Ris Mission Church.
