How did you come to know SYFC?
Jo-hann Lee, a Secondary School Junior College Ministry (SJM) volunteer, was my junior college (JC) mate. After our A-levels, he invited me to his sister’s evangelistic birthday party which fell around the Christmas period. His family then shared the Christmas story with everyone who came and that stirred my interest to find out more about the Christian faith. I started attending church with Jo-hann and his family and prayed to ask Jesus into my life during one of the services. After National Service, while I was exploring what to do before entering university, Jo-hann told me about Project Serve and I signed up. That was my first contact with SYFC.
How was your experience at Project Serve?
It was great! I was attached to SJM. We were the COVID batch and most meetings were online. Still, I enjoyed the time learning about and serving God with fellow Project Servants. The online mission trip was memorable. It was so cool that despite travel restrictions, we met YFC staff, volunteers and students from other countries over Zoom and conducted a program for them online.
After Project Serve, why did you continue as a SJM Volunteer?
During Project Serve, my understanding of the gospel deepened and I really appreciated the work and people who journeyed with me. This is already my sixth year as a volunteer. Over the years, I saw some students grow and the work God was doing in their lives encouraged me. Some started taking their faith more seriously. One of them was even contemplating baptism.
A group of JC students I was meeting with wanted to be more consistent in spending time with God and read the Old Testament in about six months. I thank God I could journey with them and witnessed their growth.
What struggles did you face as a student volunteer and now as a working volunteer?
As a student volunteer serving youth, I must submit my life to Jesus and grow in His Word. Sometimes, I felt inadequate teaching the students because the very thing I needed to teach them was the thing I should be growing in too. So, if I was not growing to love others more, like my family, I was just a hypocrite by telling the students to do so. This challenged me to confront my own sins and depended on God to change me. Now, as a working volunteer, I have the same concern. In addition, my time is very limited. I need to make wise decisions to steward my time properly.
How can our readers pray for you?
Pray that I can steward my time and energy well to love God and others, and I can handle my new role in SJM where I oversee some younger volunteers to reach out to students in the eastern part of Singapore. As this is a new team after a ministry restructuring, pray for the team’s unity.
