In December 2025, I was the assistant camp commandant for my church’s youth camp. The campsite caretaker was known to be notoriously strict with timings. Therefore, we were intentionally punctual for sessions, also because he usually hovered outside 15 minutes before the end of booking time, like a human countdown clock.
On our final night, we had booked the hall until 10:00 pm. We were having a wonderful time worshipping God and praying for each other that 10:00 pm came and went. At 10:05 pm, the speaker whispered to me, “Are we in trouble?” Worriedly, I stepped out of the hall, and found the caretaker standing outside. My heart sank as I apologized and asked for more time to wrap up. What he said next was unexpected.
“Don’t be too loud, and remember to turn off the aircon.” I did not know how to respond. I went back in, and conveyed the message to the speaker. He was stunned. “Wow you guys have serious favour – this never happens here!” he remarked. We enjoyed an extended, unhurried time of ministry, with many youths encountering God and even one youth receiving Christ for the first time!
Reflecting later, I realised God was at work. This was actually not my first encounter with this caretaker. The day before, I had spent a few moments saying goodbye to my brother and his family after their service (his church uses this campsite for their Sunday services). The caretaker happened to be there, and my brother introduced me to the caretaker as his brother. In that very brief time of family connection, I stopped being a “client” to the caretaker, and became part of a community of believers working together for God’s purpose.
God used a simple introduction to extend His favour through the caretaker to us, through which He orchestrated a breakthrough for the youths. God opens doors only He can open, in His timing, according to His purpose.
