When Qingmei was 14, her parents brought her to Singapore from Fujian, China. In 2012, while studying in a polytechnic, a Poly Ministry volunteer found her in a study corner and got to know her. After graduating, she got a firsthand taste of SYFC work through Project Serve.

Her desire to share the gospel with Chinese youth grew. Sensing her parents were not ready for her step into full-time Christian ministry then, she worked in an IT training company. Her kind Christian employer gave her a weekly day off to volunteer with SYFC. So, for six years she tirelessly sought out fellow students from China, and told them about Jesus. Over the years, the Lord planted a desire in her heart for the salvation of another group of young people.

Why did you join SYFC full time and what is it about the work that excites you?

After I got married (my husband is Singaporean), I decided to join SYFC full time in response to God’s calling. For me, the exciting part of this job is teaching and guiding students to share the gospel. Sharing the gospel is what God wants us to do, and in church we don’t usually have the opportunity to do so.

How has it been serving in the ITE Ministry team?

It has been fulfilling. I get to be a part of fun activities with non-Christian students and encourage Christian students to share the gospel with them.

What is one thing you lack as you work with others. How are you overcoming it?

I lack confidence, so I’m usually seeking help. I thank God for good colleagues who support and guide me whenever I need assistance.

Share an interesting encounter with a young person.

I was connected to S because she wanted to find out more about Christianity. When I met her for evangelistic Bible study, it was the first time she heard about Jesus. I shared with her how I became a Christian and we became friends. She is still considering to be a Christian, and I’ve invited her to December’s Celebrate Christmas In Singapore (CCIS).

How have you grown since you joined us as a staff?

I am learning to serve the Lord and walk close to Him. I’m also learning to ‘shepherd’ ITE Christian students and working on using English to share the gospel with non-Christian students.

What are you looking forward to in your ministry and family in 2023?

I look forward to telling more ITE youths about Jesus. It is such a worthwhile thing to do. In January, my daughter, Grace who is three years old and my son, Noel who is 17 months old will enter a new childcare centre directly below my home.
