Peter Tan became a Christian when he was about 10 years old (1976, 1977). He came from a Christian family and has been attending Sunday school from young. One day, Peter’s Sunday school teacher gave him a book “Know What You Believe”. After going through the book, he committed his life to Jesus by following the prayer at the end of the book.
Peter got to know SYFC when he was in Secondary 2 (Whitley Secondary School). He was invited to a SYFC event.
Peter participated in activities and later served in the Committee (1981 and 1982). There, he ran club meetings and after he left school he helped in a role as a Volunteer, helping out with the adventure ministry and occasionally in SYFC camps.
“YFC was a place with lots of fun. In one camp, we were made to sit on a block of ice where we were pushed from one end to another. Besides fun, we also had serious discussions about God and the Bible studies after school did help me personally, especially when I was in the army”
SYFC played a strategic position this young person’s life. It helped, guided and gave directions to him.
The following are excerpts from my conversation with Peter.
“When we were young, though we have dreams, we may not know how to get there. YFC was there to help us, thus adding values to our lives which we carry out throughout our lives.”
“The leadership skills which I had learnt while I was a committee member actually helped me to plan and strategize. The other thing that stayed with me was the interest and focus on youths. Because of my passion and burden for youths, I want to make sure that they are growing up well in the Lord.”
“I want to encourage you to participate in the activities. Be involved and understand the philosophy and passion that YFC has for youths. The next thing is to look at the area that you have interest in, for eg. Sports and Adventure Ministry”
“In conclusion, besides learning all the skills that had helped me through in my adult life, I have developed great friendship with a number of people in YFC that has lasted until now. The values that they have taught me about God and even about moral issues have influenced me in the way I conduct myself and live my life.”
